Beyond Rugby Gives Back To Bermuda

As part of Beyond Rugby's program to help young people develop character and succeed in school, the under-17 rugby team aided Parks workers and the Friends of the Bermuda Railway Trail to repair the trail near Francis Patton School.

This week the volunteers worked with Richard Gaglio of Hinson Hall Stables and Claudette Baisden of the parks department to implement a new technique to reduce the erosion on the trail. Beyond Rugby was humbled to join in the trail's restoration.

"Beyond Rugby Bermuda doesn't just build rugby players, our goal is to build great young men and women," commented John Layfield, founder of Beyond Rugby. "Rugby is our sport, but kids are our focus and that involves much more then sport."

The Beyond Rugby program looks to develop their players by developing them both on and off the rugby field. By engaging in purposeful community initiatives the rugby teams embody the core values upon which the program is based.

Chairman of Bermuda Rugby Football Union, Gareth Nokes told URugby that "these outreach programs ensure participants understand the work involved in maintaining and developing the islands infrastructure which, in turn, instills a sense of respect for future generations to come. Our aim is not simply producing excellent rugby players but, more importantly, fine young men who will be role models and future leaders."

This restoration event is part of a project to improve and maintain the 19 miles of the railway trail, which is host to hikers and bikers alike.
