Norwich University 7s Season is in Full Swing


Norwich University is a familiar face around URugby events, including this year's Ariel Re Bermuda 7s tournament. But it was only the start, Norwich University continued their 7s season at the University of New Hampshire on April 9th, 2017. The field of competition at the Scott Milley 7s really showed a challenge for the Cadets, as they faced tough opponents such as AIC and New England College. 

Results Show Growth of Skills from Norwich Players

At the 2017 Ariel Re Bermuda 7s, Norwich University finished the tournament with a record of 2-4. Norwich faced some strong opponents in Pool Play as they lost to Kutztown University's Second Side 27-0 and the Ariel Re All Stars 31-0. They finished Pool Play with a close game against University of Pennsylvania but a late try gave Penn the win by a score of 17-14.

Norwich found themselves on the second day in the Shield Round Robin where they defeated St. Joseph's Second Side with a 14-10 victory to start off the day. The following match resulted in a 26-12 success over the University at Albany. Norwich's final game of the tournament gave them the opportunity to revenge their original loss to University of Pennsylvania, but it resulted in a 19-10 loss.

The Norwich A-Side concluded the Scott Milley 7s Tournament with a record of 2-3. They finished pool play with a record of 1-1. Norwich defeated Hartford 26-0 but then fell to New England College, 26-12. After falling to AIC in the quarterfinals 33-22, they were off to the Plate bracket. A strong showing in the Plate Semi-Finals results in a 34-0 victory over Westfield State put them against UConn for the Plate final. In a close match-up UConn defeated the Cadets 24-19.

The Norwich B-Side finished with a record of 3-1. After going 2-0 in B-Side Pool Play with victories over Hartford and New England College, they faced UMass-Lowell in the B-Side Quarterfinals. After squeezing by UMass-Lowell with a 31-26 victory, they were defeated by UMass 29-19 in the B-Side Semifinals.

As a program, Norwich University Head Coach Bob Weggler recognized the positives from the Scott Milley 7s Tournament. Between both the A-Side and B-Side, they put together a total of 35 tries from 18 different players as well as 25 different players getting minutes on the pitch for great experience.

"I was proud of that as a coach" Bob Weggler told URugby in a recent interview.

URugby Helps Build Collegiate Rugby Programs

Through hosting various Collegiate Rugby tournaments, URugby has been able to build relationships with many Collegiate Rugby Programs including Norwich University. URugby provides the opportunities to take part in unique rugby tournaments such as the Ariel Re Bermuda 7s, and also assist works with Collegiate Rugby Programs to host tournaments such as the 2016 Bowl Series at Iona College.

URugby has partnered up with Norwich University to assist with the 2017 Chris Munn Scholarship 7s Tournament. This tournament will be held in April 30th, 2017 at Norwich University's Sabine Field on the Dog River Pitch.
