East Stroudsburg University took the Spoon at the ACRC7s in Virginia Beach, holding off a scrappy University of Hartford side to claim a 25-19 victory.
Last-minute tournament addition Hartford—playing their first-ever sevens tournament—looked for a while as if they might notch yet another victory in their Cinderella tour through brackets of better-known and far more experienced squads, going up by two tries midway through the first half. ESU answered quickly, though, with back-to-back tries just before the break.
Some very fancy footwork from ESU’s Taylor Nauman to start the second half put the Warriors out front, and ESU soon built on their advantage with yet another score. Temporary Hawk Josue Guerra (on loan from AIC) would streak across the line for a third Hartford try, but the contest would end with a final ESU try and conversion to seal the Warrior victory.
