Big Weekend in College Rugby

A number of high-stakes games take place this weekend as conference standings begin to settle out in advance of the American Collegiate Rugby Championship Bowl Series (Charlotte, N.C., Nov. 21-22). Sixteen top teams from eight conferences will get invites to play in the series. 

Penn State @ Kutztown

It's homecoming for Kutztown (3-0). That should say something about how important this match is for the Bears. Penn State (2-1) rolls into town ranked #2 in the ACRC coaches poll. KU holds the top spot.

Temple @ St. Joe's

In the Keystone East, Saint Joseph’s and Temple will battle it out for first and second place. Temple got off to a rocky start by dropping their first match against Millersville but bounced back with a win over Rutgers and a dominating performance of West Chester. Saint Joseph’s has been playing solid all season.

Western Michigan @ Bowling Green

Bowling Green, sitting at the top of the MAC North division, takes on 3-1 Western Michigan on Oct. 18. The Falcons can expect significant competition from the Broncos, who have won 3 straight.

Iona hosts the Bonnies on Homecoming weekend. Should be a great matchup. The Bonnies are looking to rebound from a tough start. Iona Coach Bruce McLain, fresh off a a close battle with Army, is looking to run the table through to the ACRC Bowl Series.

Army continues its march through the REC with a trip to Buffalo. The Bulls bring to the pitch a strong tradition of great rugby and desire to prove themselves in D1-A, where they are more than capable of playing the spoiler against top national teams like the Black Knights.

Clemson @ Virginia Tech

Clemson, currently tops in the ACRL at 4-0, visits Virginia Tech this weekend. The Hokies kept the pressure on league powerhouse Maryland in a close 15-5 game earlier this month and hope to use their strong defense to stymie the Tigers in this meeting of conference rivals.

About the ACRC Bowl Series

High-level collegiate rugby competition comes to Charlotte, N.C. Nov. 21-22, 2014 with the inaugural American Collegiate Rugby Championship Bowl Series. This series of matches in traditional bowl format brings the very best college rugby teams from around the country to Charlotte’s Rugby Athletic Center, a sports and events venue located just three miles from downtown.

The ACRC Bowl Series will feature eight championship bowl games over three days. The tournament is managed by URugby, a division of Sevens Sports LLC, a sports event management and marketing company specializing in creating great experiences around the sport of rugby.

Competition gets underway under the lights Friday evening Nov. 21, and heats up Saturday as the best college teams in the nation take to the pitch to compete for hardware and glory.
