Cadets Win Rugby Northeast 7s, Punch Ticket to USA Rugby 7s Nationals

EASTON, Mass. - The Norwich University men's rugby team won its second straight conference 7s championship to punch its ticket to the USA Rugby 7s National Championship at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado for the second straight year. The tournament will take place the weekend of May 19th and 20th.  Norwich made its inaugural trip last year and won the Bowl championship by placing ninth out 12 qualifiers.

Norwich traveled to Stonehill College and went undefeated on the day to win its first Rugby Northeast 7s Tournament title after winning the NECRC title last year. It marked the second straight season that Norwich won both its conference 15s and 7s titles in the same year. The A side went 6-0 on the day, while the B side went 3-0.

The A side racked up 197 points for and just 34 points against. The leading try scorers were Nate Rolling with eight and Korbin Wayton with five. The team scored 28 tries by 10 different players. Frick had 21 conversions on the day.

The B side had 84 points for and 19 against. The leading scorer on the B side was freshman Josh Knoll with four tries. The Cadets scored a total of 14 tries by eight different players.

"It was an excellent day of 7s for both sides," said NU head coach Bob Weggler. "Captain Keegan Frick's leadership and "With You" mentality set the tone for the day."

Norwich will host the fifth Annual Chris Munn 7's Tournament this Sunday. Men kickoff at 11 a.m. on Sabine Field.. Dartmouth, Middlebury, UVM and UNH will all be bringing two sides.
